New screen time rules for your kids post lockdown

Working parents and employees have experienced a significant increase in screen time throughout the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

But, it’s the online classes that have caused the biggest change in children’s screen time routine. Regardless of their age, children have been continuously interacting with their peers and teachers through screens.

Is excessive screen time bad for kids?

An excess of everything is bad; however, when it comes to excessive screen time, minimizing the exposure to digital devices and smartphones is also necessary because it can harm children’s physical health and eyesight.

According to, Dr. Mark Chebli state that Kids involving in excessive violent video games can develop an unempathetic behavior and tend to showcase less helpful behavior.  Moreover, excessive video gaming and screen time can lead to sleep-deprivation or cause bad dreams. Moreover, most children have been sleeping late struggling to get ready for their days.

An increase in online classes dramatically increased the screen time of kids as well, and there is no surprise that children may have had rely entirely on the Internet for taking classes, meeting with friends, and for entertainment purposes.

As parents, you had no choice but to increase the screen time of your children. For children who had just begun their studies in these times were the unluckiest because they had to lead a difficult life learning online.

Therefore, in the post-lockdown phase, parents need to create a strategy to scale down the screen time and let the kids become social animals again.

Best Post-Lockdown Strategies for Kids

No child likes sudden and abrupt changes in his daily routine. Since they have become so used to certain freedoms regarding the use of smartphones and tablets, it can be difficult for parents to convince them to change their ways with changing circumstances after the lockdown.

Parents and children both got addicted to digital devices amidst lockdown; which is why they reduced many activities such as exercise, yoga, and physical activity.

Now that lockdown is over and kids have been back to school, many parents still do not know how to encourage kids to involve in vital physical activities.

  1. Talk to your children

    You will need to explain to your children that things are going to change and you need to reduce their screen time.  Resistance will be natural!  Screen time is enjoyable and doesn’t require too much brain activity or exertion!

  2. Define what a screen is!

    This may seem a little silly, but are you including the television or just hand held devices and consoles. 

  3. Create a schedule

    Work with your kids to work on a schedule that works for you both.  

    Are you happy for them to have a set number of hours and when they are up, they are up for the day. Or is it best to set times in the days when they can use screens.

    Either way there is sure to be withdrawal symptoms once the screens go off!

  4. Create non-screen time activities

    It’s hard if you or your child are having to isolate due to Covid, or local restrictions mean you can’t go out.  But this half-term make sure you make time for getting out and about.  

  5. See friends off-grid

    Many kids spend their time online with their friends, so lose the want to meet up in person.  Encourage older kids off the sofa and out the door with their friends. 
    If you have younger kids, bearing any local restrictions in mind, arrange to meet in the park for a play. It will do you good to get away from the screens too!

  6. Be a good role model

    This is often the most hard.

    With working from home being the new normal for lots of parents it sometimes feels like you can’t escape from screens. 

    Make sure you take time out to spend non-screen time with the family.  Have phone-free meals, sit down and talk or play a game.

    Do however, expect criticism from the kids if you can’t keep away from your screens!
